iPhone 7 and newer models support NFC tag reading (automatic background reading is available on iPhone XS and newer). 

Most Android phones released after 2016 also support NFC, but the NFC function must be turned on in settings. 

Very old smartphones (especially pre-2014 models) or budget devices without NFC hardware will not work. 

Thick wallet cases or metal cases may also interfere with scanning.
